She's super talented, professional, and flexible - which is amazing you when you have kids that you can't always find a sitter for!

So that's a little bit about Katelyn, but now it's time to get to know her even better, and check out what she's giving away today!

Hello!  My name is Katelyn.

I blog over at Inner Soles.  I want to tell you a few things about myself.  I haven't always been a huge believer in natural medicine.  In fact I was as much about western medicine as any one.  It wasn't until western medicine failed me time after time that I searched for another source of healing.

In December of 2011 my nine month old baby was diagnosed with severe asthma and chronic pneumonia.  After months of antibiotics, chest x-rays, breathing treatments, steroids, and sleepless nights his pediatrician informed me that my last option was having him admitted to Primary Children's Medical Center for "observation".
breaks my heart just looking at this picture
He gave me NO hope that a solution would be found or that they'd be able to help my poor baby.  I asked for 1 week to see if I could come up with anything else.  In that week I turned to a friend.  Through holistic healing she helped me change my son's diet and introduced me to Essential Oils that I could use instead of his nebulizer steroid treatments.  To say I was skeptical would be an understatement.  I cried countless nights with a baby who could hardly breathe and was beyond desperate for a solution.  After a week I went back to my doctor.  They did a chest x-ray and it was clean!  My baby was sleeping through the night, not weezing every time he moved and best of all he was happy again.  The doctor was amazed and asked me what I did.  When I told him I used Essential oils and eliminated diary and soy from his diet he looked at me with wide eyes.  He couldn't believe that I hadn't used a single "drug" to get the pneumonia that had wreaked havoc on my babies lungs for months to clear up.  He was utterly shocked and became a believer.  I started out a skeptic and turned into a believer.  Over time I've learned everything and anything I can about Essential Oils.  I want to share that with you and offer you the opportunity to see how they work in your life.

Essential Oils aren't a new thing.  In fact they go back at least 2,000 years, if not longer.  There are records in the bible of the use of plants and their oils in the treatment of illness and for religious purposes.  The Egyptians, Greeks and the Romans all used them.  For thousands of years Essential Oils have been a trusted form of medicine.  During WWI a chemist named Gattefossé experimented on soldiers wounds.  He discovered Essential Oils that greatly accelerated the healing process.  Through his work we learned that it is possible for Essential Oils to penetrate the skin and reach the blood and the lymph in our body.

If you've ever used Essential Oils you'll know that they aren't a typical "oil".  If you spill a pure therapeutic grade Essential Oil it won't leave an oily stain or residue.  The reason for this is simple actually.  In the book Practicle Aromatherapy by Shirley Price she gives the best explanation I have ever read.

"It is the 'heart' of the plant and is present in only very, very small quantities.  It is the energy from the original life force of the plant which we introduce into the body through Essential Oils.  It has been said that Essential Oils are actually the 'hormones' of the plant.  This is easy to believe, because the hormones that our bodies produce during our whole lifetime... are so limited it would only fill a thimble.  It would take ten large buckets full of orange blossoms to extract a thimble full of Neroli Essential Oil."

What that means is that and Essential Oils are not actually oils, they are the  hormone of the plant that we can use to heal our bodies.  However some Essential Oils should NEVER be used.  Each for various reasons but each equally important.  Those Oils include Bitter almond, Boldo leaf, yellow camphor, horseradish, Jaborandi Leaf, Mugwort, mustard, Pennyroyal, Thuja, Tansy (in any form including Blue Tansy and Idaho Tansy), Rue, Sassafras, Savin, Southernwood, Wormseed, Wormwood.

My advice to friends and clients is to ALWAYS consult a certified aromatherapist or Essential Oil specialist.  You should also always do your homework.  Essential Oils can effect each individual differently.  If you have any health conditions there may be certain Essential Oils you should avoid and others that will help a great deal. Education is important.

As part of a guest blogger The Undone Ladies are letting me do a give away as well.  Essential Oils have become a daily part of my life and have helped me and my family countless times.  The two essential Oils in today's give away are Lavender and Peppermint (5ml bottles).

Lavender Essential Oil (latin name Lavendula Officinalis)

Lavender is a go to oil.  If you don't know what oil to use, grab your Lavender.  Lavender has the ability to speed up cell growth so it is great for burns, cuts, scrapes, bites, bruises, and sunburns.  It is also good for muscle aches and pains, and sprains.  We often use Lavender for headaches, migraines, the flu, and ear aches.  It is a good fever reducer so I have used it on my little one when he was teething.  It can be helpful for those who suffer from anxiety and depression as well.  In the correct dose (a little goes a long way with all Essential Oils) Lavender can help with insomnia and all sleeping problems.  It can also stabilize blood pressure and is good for respiratory problems such as asthma, croup, pneumonia, and the common cold.  In the right amount Lavender can be very calming but if you use to much it can be stimulating.

Peppermint Essential Oil (Latin name Mentha Piperita)
Peppermint is an oil that should be used with caution on pregnant women and small children.  This is a hot oil so I recommend always using a carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, etc.) when it is applied to the skin.  Peppermint is antibacterial, anti-carcinogenic  anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral and very invigorating.  In my opinion this is the best oil when it comes to digestive disturbances (such as colic, nausea, vomiting, travel sickness, and morning sickness).  It is also good at reducing inflammation, pain, and muscular pain.  It is good for head aches as well (1 drop rubbed on your hair line and ear lobes can help ease a head ache).  I have also used it for sinus problems, mouth or gum infections  circulation problems and general fatigue.  In fact the first thing I do every morning is grab my peppermint oil.  I put one drop of almond oil and one drop of peppermint oil in my hand rub it together and then rub it on my chest. It gives me the little jump start I need to keep up with my boys first thing in the morning when my butt is dragging.  Peppermint Essential Oil is also helpful with asthma attacks.  You can put 1 drop under your tongue and breathe through your mouth to help open your airways.   In a study done by Dr. Dembar of the University of Cincinnati it was discovered that inhaling peppermint oil increased the mental accuracy of the students tested by up to 28%.

These are just two of my favorite Essential Oils.  There are hundreds to choose from and each have various benefits.  Again I want to say that education is important when it comes to essential Oils.  Do your research, talk to an aromatherapist, and as always use common sense.

The Essential Oils that I use and sell come from a companies called Primavera and Shirley Price.  Both companies are based out of Europe (Germany and England) and are held to a high purity scale as compared to state side companies.  Always make sure you are using a pure therapeutic grade essential oil.  If you have any questions, would like to book a foot zone, or order Essential Oils feel free to contact me at innersoles01@gmail.com or find me on Facebook.

Another awesome part of the give away today is an aroma stone.  There are many different ways to use Essential Oils and one of them is to diffuse them into the air.  Aroma stones are a great way to gently diffuse essential oils or fragrances.

Membil is slightly eccentric and wanted the aroma stones to reflect that personality. Aroma stones are easy to use! Just simply soak your stone in water (only once ever!) to expand the pours. Then add 1-2 drops of essential oils and inhale! Repeat as often as you feel. You can mix the Essential Oils and use them at one time or you can wait until the smell fades and use a different Essential Oil.  We use our Aroma Stones with essential oils all the time, especially during the dreary winter months. We feel that Aroma Stones help clean the air and keep sicknesses away when using essential oils. Come stop by our shop!

The Aroma Stone in the Give away is Greta the Hippo
